Arizona

arizona_029.jpg

Spent a few weeks in Arizona with Jenn visiting my parents. I have a real affection for this place. Most of the shots are from our weekend in Sedona where we were feeling the feel-good power of the Vortex.

Tanzania

tanzania_030.jpg

Kind and generous people and stunning landscape make this country a terrific place to visit. We also made a short trip to the island of Zanzibar featuring endless white sand beach.

Wimbledon Men's Final

wimbledon_08_federer_nadal_008.jpg

Many call this titanic clash between Federer and Nadal the greatest tennis match of all time. Luckily we stayed through all the rain delays even if it was heartbreaking to see Federer lose.

Stella Artois Championships

stella_artois_08_djokovic_nadal_010.jpg

Even though everyone looks to the Wimbledon final as the best match of all time, it might not have even been the best grass court match of 2008. The quality of tennis on display in this 7-6 7-6 Nadal triumph over Djokovic was as competitive and athletic as anything from SW19.

Drumheller

This picturesque town on the Red Deer river in the Badlands of southern Alberta makes for a terrific getaway weekend.

Warwick Castle

warwick_castle_008.jpg

Beautiful visit with Jenn to Warwick Castle. It is a place that reeks of history and encourages free roaming. The best castle to visit in the UK. Fighting base and beautiful high ground. Here you can sense it. History suddenly seems within reach.

London in June

london_june_2007_022.jpg

So it has been raining here a lot but it is wierd how quickly people adapt to finding the action in dry spots. This album is a collection of photos taken in June on the streets of London. Highlights include Wimbledon, the Science Museum, and Anthony Gormley at the Hayward.

Travel Guatemala

guatemala_2007_003.jpg

Two weeks in this country south of Mexico is an inspiring and enlightening experience. Particularly if your travels cross over the easter festivities of Semana Santa. Our route took us from the cosy confines of pretty Antigua to the caribbean coast of Livingstone and Rio Dulce (sweet river), up to the Mayan lands in and around Tikal and finally out west to the beautiful and mystical Lake Atitlan.

Dan's European Tour

amsterdam_2007_041.jpg

Ok so not quite European but a tour of two great cities nonetheless - London and Amsterdam. I've been waiting for many years for my friend to visit but good things come to those who wait.

Living London

lovely_london_018.jpg

It's remarkable how a city so full of contradictions can reach agreement in so many ways. This is a soothing and comforting London you might not expect to see, calm in the storm.

Algarve, Portugal

portugal_038.jpg

Named after the Arabic "Al-Gharb" (the West) this region stretches across 155km of stunning coastline. The people are tremendously friendly and the fall weather provides a nice contrast to the increasingly chilly London streets. These photos are of a trip taken with two friends to a villa near Armação de Pêra. Sunny days we lied on the beach, cool winds or rain saw us tour the intruiging localities of Silves, Lagos and Cabo de São Vicente, the furthest south-west point of Europe.

Luxor, Egypt

luxor_egypt_077.jpg

Often termed the "world's largest open-air museum", Luxor is one of the most spectacular places on the planet. Fifteen years ago I went there with my parents and finally found the opportunity to return. Home to the Valley of the Kings, the Land of the Dead, and the spectacular Luxor and Karnak temples.

Big Fight London

london_boxing_016.jpg

The product of an exciting night in east London watching the Big Fight Live with my friend Ilyas Mohammed. Danny Williams outpointed previously unbeaten Matt Skelton in a deserved split decision over 12 rounds to retain his Commonwealth heavyweight boxing title. The undercard featured rising superstar Amir Khan winning his sixth professional light welterweight fight with a stoppage in the third round over Jackson Williams.

Faces of Deptford

deptford 016.jpg

Photographs from an exercise for Sociology Live at Goldsmiths College. Deptford doesn't have a good reputation in London but I have always found it to be a friendly and culturally diverse area. These photographs were taken on February 11, 2006 in and around Deptford. The people in the photographs gave permission for these portraits.

Wimbledon 2005

wimbledon_2005_021.jpg

Got my queue number and waited in line for three hours on the first day of Wimbledon 2005 (Monday, June 20). Watched Sharapova, Henman and French Open champion Nadal practice. Caught matches in the brilliant sunshine including Thomas Enqvist, who I remember watching play in the French Open 1995 after being junior champion for years. I sat right behind him at talked in his ear. Come on Thomas! He lost. Later it was rumoured he was looking for a guy who kept talking during his breaks, breaking concentration. Just rumours. Johnny Mac was overheard on the BBC commentary joking about the zinc oxide on the noses of the Englishmen and speaking of the 'english tan' as tomato red faces (including mine unfortunately) abound.

The Famous Arsenal

arsenal_030.jpg

Playing the most stylish football on the planet, with a new stadium on the horizon and a crop of young superstars to rival any club in the world, Arsenal continues to entertain and tantalize supporters and neutrals alike. These photos are from three matches this year away against Southampton (we'll never play here again), home to Liverpool and the FA Cup semifinal with Blackburn. I earned my silver membership status this year so should get to most of the big games next year.

Brighton Beach Memoirs

brighton005.jpg

An mid-March weekend proclaimed the first day of summer by a singer/songwriter in front of a throbbing seaside pub basked in sunshine. You need a child and a dog to really fit into this still-trendy commuting retreat for 30-somethings looking for a little quality of life to go with their creative director or NGO communications post. Overheard: "Brighton is more London than London".

Old rocks and worship spots

oldrocks013.jpg

England is filled with historical spots but none dwarfs the mythical splendor of Stonehedge. Local cathedrals in Salisbury and Winchester provide further connection to the ancient echoes of voices, texts (like the copy of the Magna Carta) and history.

West Coast Trail

west_coast_trail_017.jpg

A photo chronicle of one of the most beautiful patches of earth, stretching 77km or 123,294 paces from Port Renfrew to Bamfield on the west coast of southern Vancouver Island. These grainy over/under exposed photos were taken with a disposable camera that survived -- only just -- the Trail. It turned out a crap scan job from Wal Mart did more damage to the film than seven days on the greatest 'buddy' hike in the world. From left; Dan Sombach of St. Albert, Alta; Matt O'Donnell of Calgary, Alta; and Chris Brauer of London, UK.
